What if MS clinical care didn’t just record what happened, but actively improved what happens next?
THRIVE-MS (Transforming Health records for automated Real-world data generation, Improved care, Value and Efficiency) is a UK-wide initiative redesigning how MS information is captured, structured, and used within routine clinical care.
Across 35 NHS sites, including Cambridge University Hospitals, Royal Devon, Frimley Health, Swansea Bay, Aneurin Bevan, Plymouth, ESNEFT, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, and Cardiff and Vale, we are implementing structured MS data capture directly within electronic health records.
Ten sites are already fully backfilled and operational, with the remaining sites in active set-up.
FROM DOCUMENTATION BURDEN TO CLINICAL INSIGHT
MS care generates complex, high-volume information — from disease activity and imaging to blood monitoring and treatment decisions. Traditionally, much of this sits in free-text notes, making it difficult to reuse for care optimisation or research.
THRIVE-MS enables the most important MS clinical data to be captured in a structured format aligned with an international common data model.
This reduces administrative workload while improving the quality and usability of clinical information.

RESEARCH-READY BY DEFAULT
For patients who consent, structured clinical data can be securely transferred to national and international MS registries — including MSBase, the UK MS Register, and the MS Pregnancy Register — without additional burden on clinical teams or patients.
BUILT IN COLLABORATION
THRIVE-MS is being developed with NHS sites and academic partners including the Healthcare Improvement Studies (THIS) Institute, University of Cambridge, University of Edinburgh, and industry partners including Oracle Health, Epic, PatientCare, and iMed Web.
